What Were Some of Your Original Goals in Japanese?

When you get to a basic level of Japanese fluency, you realize that English is not a thing. Some Japanese people do derive value from just having someone to speak English with. I've heard the term when I used to be an English teacher, ago bandit. These are Japanese people who befriend foreigners essentially to practice their English.
