When the Japanese left, there were about six and a half million people on Taiwan. By 1950, that number was already close to eight million. Chiang Kai-shek in 1949, not only did he get decisively defeated by the one group of Chinese, he had been trying to wipe out since 1927,. The USA had washed their hands of him. And over in China, Mao made no bones about it: He said the nationalists were defeated and the People's Republic was the successor state to the former ROC.
