The Evolution of Medicine in the First World War

The First World War is seen as a time of complete stasis, of conservative thinking. But in the area of medicine alone, there can't have been many four-year stretches where medicine was transformed as radically as 1428. This is the age before antibiotics and so almost every wound was infected. Abdominal wounds in 1915 are a death sentence; by 1918, they're regularly saving soldiers.
