i've only ever really seen a of photographsof my mum's dad. He died in his fifties, long before i was born. And so it was always very difficult for me to try and imagine grandpa as a soldier. I think the scars of the first war and the second world war are for all time. The wounds that were inflicted on the population, on our civilization, o our psychology as a species, i think those wounds are forever. When you're confronted at the memorial and saint john the baptist church in great wessington, and you're confronted by these young men, their youth was utterly lost. They didn't grow old they were just cut down
