The view was that whatever the mother, and curiously it's only just the mother, whatever the mother is looking at, will have a very visible impact on the appearance of the offspring. Saranas gives a very unfortunate example of a mother who looked at a monkey while having intercourse and ended up with a monkey-like offspring. And his explanation is, well, this just shows not only that the mother is influencing the form, the appearance ofthe offspring, but that she's not doing it through seed. She has to be doing it through her soul.
