Rana Volona from the very start was a very staunch anti-European. She would adopt the harshest methods possible for those that were practicing Christianity as an outside influence and an insult to the native Malagasabe beliefs. Between 1837 and 1856, the Queen ordered the detention and persecution of at least a hundred Christians in just these ways.
In 1828, after the death of her husband, Queen Ranavalona I. came into power by killing all other potential regents (wives, sons, mothers). At that time, she was between 30 and 40 years old. Ranavalona I. went down in history rather ingloriously and bears the surname “the cruel”. Many Malagasy call her regency tany maizina, in English “years of darkness”. But despite this she is still a rather complex character. One who did amazing and terrible things at the same time. Let us tell her story today
