How to Orient a Boom Microphone

The mike element is usually covered by a black foam wind screen, which makes it impossible to see if the microphone isn't oriented correctly. Just squeeze the foam on your headsets microphone and you'll notice that the microphone inside the foam is not round like the foam that covers it. If you have any doubt, just pull off the foam and look at the flat side pointed at your mouth. It will typically have a few slits in it so that the air pressure coming from your mouth as you speak hits the mike element.
