The Importance of Visual Representation for Words

In a web application, for example, we use icons to convey specific meaning. Your perspective on whether or not the icons communicate more meaning is entirely dependent on the language that you speak. If I'm using a web application that happens to be in a different language, the icons are probably going to be more meaningful to me than the words that are going that are displayed beside those icons.
