Langston Hughes is so identified with Harlem Renaissance that we really lose kind of that sense of him as a broader figure, a more global figure. There are any number of writers. Hughes, Taunte Cullen, Richard Wright was somebody who was important to me for a while. W.B. Du Bois beyond the opening chapter of the Soil of Black Folk. And then later I started to read in the Caribbean canon, the historians and the poets as well.
