The Structure of Sensory Information

Sensory information needs to get to the central nervous system, which is our brain brainstem. The first degree of processing happens in the thalamus - a paired walnut-shaped structure that sits deep in the brain. If you are going to become consciously aware of something, it must go to the Thalamus first. And then it will send it to the appropriate part of the cerebral cortex for conscious awareness. This is an important thing that our brain does all the time: desensitization.
