MSC is one of the few major shipping companies that's not publicly traded. It operates a cruise line and publishes annual results, but its cargo business doesn't release financial statements. Apponte bought an old German break-bulk ship and started MSC in 1970. He carved out a niche by taking on underserved routes; he also developed a shrewd business model.
