Pocahontas was not madly in love with Captain John Smith, she also never dramatically saved his life. It was more like an elaborate ceremony to improve interrelations that John Smith totally misinterpreted. So Pocahontas is made out to be this exceptional figure because she, again, in the colonial mindset, was the first one to see how important the English were.
