What's the Thrust Behind the Emergence of the New Science?
There's always a pull towards becoming determinist in any science, because you want simple explanations. People gravitate to those kinds of explanations because they're simple and easily picked up by the news media. But whenever you look carefully at any study, you can see that the data just aren't there. So it's not as simple as saying, the context determines your behaviour. The context did determine the behaviour of some people, or a lot of people,. Not everybody, and not for all time. And if you can teach people to do better, that means there's a mind that can overcome these kinds of impulses. This is what i try to emphasize when i write about moral agency.
