The Cognitive Perspective on Stereotyping

Innocent stereotypes involve differentiation, whereas aggressive stereotypes involve otherizing. Differentiation refers to this process of categorizing how people are similar or different. Otherizing is stereotyping whose primary purpose is to draw a line between you and me. It's more than prejudice; it creates social solidarity.
