The Condemned Man by Hugo
Hugo sets forth a world created in the mind of this prisoner who is condemned to death. At one point, he thinks there's some kind of party or celebration going on. And the guard tells him that it's because the galley slaves are headed out. He goes and watches from a window as prisoners in chains are dragged out into the courtyard.
