What Is Cognitive Load Theory?
Cognitive load theory came from educational psychologists working with that idea of a computer as a metaphor for the brain. There are three types of cognitive load, intrinsic, germane and extraneous. Intrinsic load is the inherent complexity of the content. Germane load is what you're using to understand and integrate content into your long term memory. Extrasional load could be environmental distractions or internal distractions like pain in the body. And then finally redundancy of content. The brain just craves novelty and interest. If things are too redundant or if students perceive they're too redundant, they will tune it out.
