The ancient Greek word for soul, psyche, and the Latin word for soul,. anima, both first meant breath. If you want to check if a person who's been hit by a car is alive, you check to see if they're breathing. So we might ask then more generally what it means to live. And I think that you can define a living thing as a being that has the capacity for a self-motion.
