The Life and Times of Hatoiyama Kazuo
Hatoiyama Kazuo was born into a samurai family in Katsuyama Domain, Japan. When his brother Jutaro died, he vowed to make up for the loss by studying Chinese classics at an experimental government-run school. He went on to study law and eventually earned a BA from Columbia University. In 1875, he successfully petitioned to be sent to the United States for study overseas.
