The Relationship Between the Father and the Son Is Eternal
Athanasius in particular defends the fatherhood of God is, he says that the father, or no, it defends the deity of Christ rather. The deity of Christ, the son is eternal because the father is eternal. And therefore the son must be of the same essence as the father. So fundamentally God is what he is because of us and not dependent upon creation.
