The idea that reading comprehension can be thought of as a set of transferable, generic skills is common across schools. This misallined idea significantly degrades the quality of teaching children receive in our schools. It's worth noting that things like inference as a generic skill and prediction is a generic skill - they haven't just come from nowhere. They've come from people trying to reverse engineer how to teach reading.
