The Origins of Divine Fluidity in Near Eastern Religion
In this passage, the prophet sees God as an elderly man on a great throne. The imagery here bears a striking resemblance to the Canaanite descriptions of El and Baal. In contrast to Zeus on Mount Olympus, Baal, Asher, Marduk and Yahweh could take different bodies and be present in different shapes simultaneously in different places.
