The Importance of War in Hobbyism
The war effort created factories that after the war had to turn their hand to other things. Lots of munitions factories were turned over to producing bicycles. So we didn't just have a surplus of leisure time, we also had a surplus of sort of leisure mechanisms as it were. And I think that had a great deal to do with the prominence of the hobbyist in this period.
