After hitler launched arbar operation barbarossa, and attacked the soviet union's western flank in june of 19 forty one, the japanese quickly prepared to attack its eastern flank. Soviet premier joseph talin was very concerned about having to fight on two fronts against powerful militaries that could be an existential threat to the nation. And a great way to avoid that would be to get the us into a war with japan,. To keep it occupied and take the heat off them while they wrestled with the notses. Starting such a war was a project that soviet intelligence would nickname operation snow, for reasons we'll see.
