Cold Testing Balloons

The first balloons were launched on November 3, 1944. The plan was to launch 10,000 balloons between November and March but about 400 of them actually went up in April. Radio songs aboard some of the balloons allowed the Japanese military to track balloons for about 30 hours until they were out of range. But learning whether any of the balloons actually hit or damaged targets in North America after that required Japan to monitor American media for news.
