How to Manage the Scale of a Novel

As a short story writer moving into novelling, it can be difficult to manage the scope and scale of a novel. If you look at your word count, and you lookat the word count of an average novel, you sort of realize you've climbed the foothills and you're now looking up at the peak,. And it can' be a little discouraging. But i've been thinking about this, and this is the part where a lot of us slow down, is in the middle. It happens with short stories, and it also happens with novels. So that's what i'm reminding myself of this week as i work on this next segment of the novel.
