The War Between Protestants and Catholics

Tolerance for Protestants remained in force until it was revoked in 1685. Attempts at reconciliation, like the 1561 Coliqui of Poisei, were intended not so much to bury the hatchet as used to cut off the heretical growth within Christianity. The Catholics spoke of conquering and leading back to brothers who have strayed while the Huguenots boasted: We shall make them admit before this holy assembly that it is we and not they who follow the true church.
