We want to be considered trustworthy and consistent. Those factors are way more motivating than whatever math you've worked out under your ledger. So don't try to do it today. You have to look into the future and say, what could I see in the future that would tell me that this belief that I hold is not true? And we can see this for political beliefs. It's like people will support candidates where had you asked them before they actually started their support,. They would say, absolutely not. But the minute that bumper sticker goes on the car or they cast a vote because that vote also informs who their identity is. Now when those new facts come in, what do they do?
I recently sat down for a live event and Q&A with the great Annie Duke to discuss her new book, Quit: The power of knowing when to walk away. This episode is the audio from that event. Quit is all about how to develop a very particular skill: how to train your brain to make it easier to know which goals and plans are worth sticking to and which are not.
