The Cost of Magic
Cost is much easier to explain in rule-based magic systems. If the energy you're getting from your magic is cheaper than letting the donkey do it, then your medieval economy just develop parts. What can we do in fiction to make ramifications work so that it's going to feel real? You don't usually play a video game and comment out that saying, oh, wow, I wish I could do this. Not in the way that when you read a good magic system, you come out and say, wow,I wish I were a jedi. How can you make that work in your fiction?"
