As a medical student, i learned that the first thing you do is try to find confirming evidence for what your first sort of impulse is. And it's much harder for your brain that does not like in a cognitive distance to actually say, but wait, wait, maybe you're wrong. Some of the things that could go either way, if they fit both patterns, you really can't use them. I'd always seek out disconfirming evidence. We have this with our surgeons all the time: They really like to get a white blood cell count which does go up with infections and so on.
