The Big Bang and Dark Energy
Astronomers found that the expansion of the universe is not slowing down. This meant our universe should fly apart forever with no big crunch. But to make something accelerate, you need to apply energy to it. And since we can't otherwise detect this force, scientists named it Dark Energy. It looks like there may be a cosmological constant after all and it's what's stepping on the universe's accelerator.
