There are no defined excreatory mechanisms to get rid of excess iron from the body. We absorb what we call non heme iron through a transporter that is known as the divergent metal transporter or DMT1 and that sits on the luminal membrane of the entrasites in the duodenum. One of the main biological functions of iron is that it can exchange its oxidation state very readily between its oxidised form which is iron 3 or ferric iron and the reduced state which is iron 2 or ferric Iron. So if you're vegetarian or vegan then heme won't be a component of your diet, but there's still some good news for people who want to eat more
