Moctezuma is hit three times in the chest and the head before the spaniards raise their shields and take him back into the palace. At that point, unable to pacify his own people, he outlived his usefulness to cortes. It is absolutely possible that the conquistidors decided to finish their puppet off rather than care for his wounds. Any spaniards who are too slow get captured and dragged off to be sacrificed.
