The Difference Between Fetish and Hybrid Objects

For Baba, hybridity is the revaluation of the assumption of colonial identity through the repetition of discriminatory identity effects. So when the colonial subject is turned into this sort of fractalized hybrid figure, it turns its gaze back onto the colonizing subject and renders them that same form of hybridity. For Baba, the fetish reacts to the change in the value of the phallus by fixing on an object prior to the perception of difference. An object that can metaphorically substitute for its presence will register in the difference. And so there is a sort of neutrality present in the fetish object.
