The Importance of Deep Sleep in Infections

Infections can trigger various responses from the immune system. This is one of the reasons why people who are sick, or if you've got the flue, often spend more time in bed sleeping. Deep sleep is increased when we're fighting an infection because it's the period of sleep when our metabolism is lowest. It frees up energy to mount a higher fever response. Shivering is a response to a fever and is beneficial in releasing heat. So therefore, when we have a fever, we spend more time during rem sleep in order to be able to shiver and fight off the fever. We don't where not paralyzed deep sleep.
