Marvin co-wrote and played drums on Beechwood 4 5 7 8 9 by the Marvelets. But this kind of thing ended up with gay being pushed by very gaudy in the direction of writing, which was not something he wanted to do. At that time in Motown there was a strict demarcation: only person who was allowed to write and perform and produce was Smokey Robinson. Everyone else was either a writer-producer or a singer - Marvin knew he wanted to be a singer first and foremost.
