The Battle of the Fortieth Line
With the enemy so close, some units would have to sacrifice themselves in a dangerous feudal counter attack. This dubious honor fell to the fortieth line demi brigade of general francois vautrin's division. By all accounts, it was a valiant charge, but predictably, vautrin was stopped dead by the austrians. The fortieth suffered terrible casualties, but succeeded in buying precious time for the rest of the army to escape and reposition.
