CNN's David Bianculli has been following the story of drone sightings in California for months. He says he was surprised to learn that sailors didn't know what these object were. The Navy used terms like unmanned aerial systems or drones over and over, but never u a i e. In fact, when they first learned about this incident, the deck logs were pointing in that direction as far as using terminology that is known. But at that time, the term u a p hadn't been disseminated to the navy as an official term.
