The History of Syphilis and Smallpox in the Early 1500s

Smallpox and syphilis arrived in England for the first time in the early 1500s. Both diseases caused pockmarks on the infected person's skin, so they were referred to as poxes. The blisters and pustules produced by smallpox were a little smaller than those produced by syphilis. One of the first known victims of the disease in England was Henry VIII.
