This is especially a problem for black women because historically racial pseudoscience from the 18th and 19th centuries literally believed that black people had higher pain thresholds than white folks. Even today more than 50% of med school graduates will say yes to the question of whether black people's skin is slightly thicker than white people's skin, she says.
