Avalanche lets people create these specialized areas for blockchain execution that maybe have very different trade-offs. The primary network though is just like any other chain in a sense where you have like a single state or virtual machine that everyone validates and participates in but then on the side have this notion of subnets which allow chains to communicate easily between each other because they're validated by the same group. A salana avalanche has taken a different approach which is trying to really maximally distribute this like primary network while still keeping throughput much lower there.
