Spittle Bug Foam Home, but They're Really Good at It

The meadow spittle bug creates its own aquatic ment to protect itself. Some people have suggested that by covering themselves in a mass of wet foam, they can produce a favorable micro climate. But perhaps a more obvious explanation is that it's protection. If a predatory insect blunders into this sticky, wet mass of foam, they're quite likely to drown in it. So it is really a defensive perimeter, it seems likely.
