Suleiman's failed challenge at Vienna was the beginning, not the end, of yet another phase of the incessant warring that defined Charles' life. The Habsburgs, both Charles and Ferdinand were now fully committed to Central Europe for the foreseeable future. This was the impetus for a long, draining, and vicious conflict with the Ottomans. It would last for the next several centuries and eventually reach everywhere from North Africa to Greece and beyond.
