Plato's Pharmacy - There Is No Real Transcendental Signified
In order for any word to actually point to a mental image, depends as much on what it does not signify as what it does signify. Underneath all representation there is no transcendental signified that will exist if we dug down deep enough into language. Despite this, there have been efforts to try and ground a certain realness underneath representation. But in the case of plato, there is a belief that underneath writing,. so the physical act of writing on a paper is the possibility of real speech.
