Is There a Vital Force?

The vital force was generally invoked to explain things like growth, different ation of cells. It was not used to explain animal heat or animal's exertion of motion. Helmholtz wanted to define what might legally exist in the world in such a way that the vital force would be impossible. The only forces that might exist in nature are attractive and repulsive force acting in a direct line between the particles.
