Jonathan Spencer is the reason I became a historian, he says. My dissertation in grad school was on reformers and revolutionaries in Hunan province. The things that have interested me are things that resonated with my own experience of being a foreigner in China. And it's really the 19th century in the early 20th century that I'm most interested in.
