Insects can eat our waste products, and then we can eat the insects. But bacteria don't need to feed on any photo synthetic products. We don't have to grow anything for them to live on. They just combine hydrogen and oxygen and carbon dioxide; they make their own body mass from those. It's much more efficient than photo synthesis.
