Men invest considerably more in children than do the males of our closest relatives, chimpanzees and bonobos who are uniformly deadbeats. The author seemed to think that this has given license to men in particular to help to create policies and expectations that limit women's ability to do what they want to do. Just because we have a maternal instinct doesn't mean that we should do anything in particular. But that's a separate point from whatever the science says about maternal instinct.
