"I was ambitious. I don't want to, you know, that kind of stuff," he says about his early days on SNL. "There are some just funny people that work in sandwich shops, they laugh with their friends all day." He recalls the first time he met agent Herb Karp who asked him if he and Tomlin would be interested in writing for TV shows like Carson or Cal Burnett. 'We're not Carson Mighty Art players, writers,' he responds. "'You guys are a big, funny smoking smoking' That's an interesting question... But anyway, we were the only writers higher that he did not meet.'
