Acts 6-9: The Conversion of Paul

Unshaken Saints

CHAPTER

The Importance of Nakedness

Tabitha, the daughter of Jairus, was found alive by Peter. She opened her eyes and when she saw Peter she sat up,. probably startled to be in the presence of an apostle. Peter then gave her his hand and lifted her up just like he had the laymen. And there the chapter ends. Strange way to end the chapter when you're introducing a new character that you'd really never see again.

She opened her eyes and when she saw Peter she sat up, probably startled to be in the presence of an apostle. I better sit up here. You've got every reason to be lying down. It's okay. Peter then gave her his hand and lifted her up just like he had the laymen. And when he had called the saints and widows he presented her alive just as Jesus had done with the daughter of Jairus. Those people who missed her most, those righteous companions, she's here. You get to be with her a little longer. And Tabitha's case. Perhaps there's more coats and garments to sew for those all around you that you love. Or that earlier phrase, things that she had done for them while she was with them. Well people that are going to use that time so well, I'm sure they'll keep using it if God were just to give them more. And in Tabitha's case he did. Well news like that spreads fast. And so in verse 42 it was known throughout all Japa and many believed in the Lord. Not in Peter. Right? That's exactly how Peter would want it. They believed in the Lord. And it came to pass that he, Peter, carried many days in Japa with one Simon, a Tanner. And there the chapter ends. Strange way to end the chapter when you're introducing a new character that you'd really never see again. What was that all about? Well on the one hand if he's a Tanner then he's making coverings just like Tabitha did. Is that one way to tie the two together? In fact if she's making coats and garments, is he making coats of skins to cover people's nakedness? I think there's endowment symbolism or nakedness being covered atonement symbolism throughout this. But also there's another tie in because if you're a Tanner you're working with blood and guts and animal skins and you're richly impure as a result. And if it's your occupation, do you ever get clean? Tabitha in a way was unclean because she's a dead body and you're not supposed to hang around those. And yet Peter, oh I'll hang around. I'll move in with Simon. I'll go and touch the body of Tabitha in order to raise it. Peter's starting to learn that what his traditional faith considered unclean maybe isn't unclean after all. And just wait for next week when in this same city of Japa he will have a vision that what God calls clean you should not consider unclean. And from there we're off with a message to the Gentile world. In chapter 9 God seems to be preparing Peter for that experience. And in chapter 9 he has prepared Saul to become Paul the great apostle to the Gentiles. Chapter 9 is putting everything in place. Chapter 10 next week get ready to run. But can we tie this all together in one other way as we conclude this week's lesson? You see like I said I have a daughter that's a Tabitha. We had all kinds of names floating around our heads.
