Are the Older Galaxies Different From the Newer Ones?
Astronomy as a kind of time machine. If you look at things a very, very long way away, then you're seeing them as they were 13 billion years ago and more. So what you're looking at there is almost like the ancestors of the galaxies we see around us today. They haven't settled into the characteristic spires and ellipticals that we see today. There aren't galaxies like this around in the same way today because it was a very different epoch in the universe. It also is a really, for me,really neat way of proving the Big Bang Theory that the universe was definitely very different in the past.
